One of the mainstream medium of hip hop music these days is the ever popular mixtape. Hip hop mixtapes could be easily downloaded from various online music sites where they aim to promote new artists or where they promote new songs from already established artists. It is suffice to say that the hip hop community online is a closely knit one where budding artists with great potential are encouraged and promoted with the collective help of DJs, hip hop icons, and producers. This is perhaps exactly why hip hop mixtapes produced and mixed by popular DJs featuring new artists have grown to be quite popular.

During the 70's, hip hop music was not as big as it is right now especially since the only available hip hop music for the public are the live performances. Thus, with the desire to distribute this type of music to more people, artists started to record hip hop songs with the use of the newly released cassette recorders. That is where the emergence of the hip hop mixtapes started from. Hip hop mixtapes started to evolve along with the growing popularity of the genre in New York City. After a while, though, instead of simply distributing their mixtapes, hip hop artists and DJs started to sell them to the fans. They would profit about 30$-70$ per mixtape every performance. After the 80's though, the hip hop mixtapes started to be more and more fused with electropop and party music. Artists like Doo Woop started to collaborate with DJs and MCs for their new mixtape releases. In the 90's, more and more artists started to follow the trend and recorded their live performances to have the remixed by DJs because of the increased demand that fans have for new and reinvented music.

Hip hop mixtapes these days have become more mainstream, and more of promotional tools for new hip hop artists. Other times, these mixtapes are called EPs and are on limited free release online in order to generate the desired hype. Other times, these mixtapes from popular hip hop artists are released in local music stores, with fancy cases and eye-catching cover design. These mixtapes are mostly created by companies who want to take advantage of the speed of word of mouth and the speed of travelling news over the internet. It is almost like free promotions, especially when the sample mixtapes are released online first.

MIxtapes have been very instrumental in importing and promoting hip hop music all over the world. Not only have they helped in making a name for small-time hip hop artists in the music industry, but they also brought fans closer to the artists especially when mixtapes from hip hop artists are often raw and uncensored. There is a certain level of freedom that mixtapes give artists that make them. There are issues, though, regarding their legality and the legitimacy of the mixtape releases that are downloaded online. Other than rights issues, mixtapes in the hip hop genre are very much welcomed by the community.
